Zhangjiajie City is a prefecture-level city in Hunan Province, China. It was originally known as Dayong City and it administers 2 districts (Yongding District and Wulingyuan District) and 2 counties (Cili County and Sangzhi County). Located in the northwest part of Hunan Province, Zhangjiajie City is nestled in the heartland of the Wuling Mountain region, along the upper reaches of the Li River.Renowned for its tourism industry, Zhangjiajie City is one of the most significant tourist cities in China and serves as the birthplace and central area of the Xiang-E-Yu-Qian Revolutionary Base. In September 1982, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park became the first national forest park in China. In August 1988, the Wulingyuan Scenic Area was included in the second batch of national key scenic spots. In 1992, the Wulingyuan Natural Scenic and Historic Interest Area, consisting of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and two other major scenic areas, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In February 2004, it was designated as one of the first batch of "World Geoparks" in China. In 2007, it was included in the first group of 5A-level tourist attractions in China.This region is famous for its magnificent natural landscapes, characterized by towering peaks, peculiar rock formations, deep valleys, and clear streams. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is one of its most renowned attractions, boasting rich vegetation and unique geological features. The Wulingyuan Scenic Area is known for its breathtaking stone pillars, deep canyons, and beautiful caves. These attractions attract a large number of domestic and international tourists, making Zhangjiajie a highly sought-after destination.In addition to its natural scenery, Zhangjiajie also possesses a wealth of historical and cultural heritage. The region served as a revolutionary base during the Xiang-E-Yu-Qian period, playing a crucial role in the war against Japanese aggression and the Chinese Liberation War. Visitors can explore red tourism sites to learn about significant events and heroic figures in China's revolutionary history.
